Gwacheon National Science Museum

Project Introduction

The Gwacheon National Science Museum is the third national science museum to be built in South Korea, following the Seoul National Science Museum and the National Science Museum. It was established to respond to the rapidly growing demand for science museums in the metropolitan area and to instill children and youths with dreams and interests in science and technology.

The site in Gwacheon, where the science museum is located, offers views of the Gwanaksan and Cheonggyesan Mountains. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Seoul Grand Park are situated nearby, creating a cultural belt along with the science museum, which is one of the benefits of its location. Covering a large area of 244,628 m2, the site is part of a future-oriented design that envisions the museum’s future development and growth potential. The museum features a futuristic exterior that represents “the future of South Korea’s advancement in science.” It comprises permanent exhibition halls, outdoor exhibition spaces, ecological experience areas, and astronomical facilities. The Astronomical Observatory, located at the back of the main building, was designed as a “sphere floating above the water’s surface.” The observatory recreates the night sky on its 25-m dome screen, enhancing the museum’s aesthetic appeal and allowing visitors to have a cosmic experience.

HanmiGlobal’s Role

The Gwacheon National Science Museum project was significant in that, through the project, the central and local governments jointly established a science museum for the first time in South Korea, setting the direction for establishing a network of symbolic cultural complexes in the metropolitan area. The project, covering a land area of 165,000 m2, with a total floor area of 49,167 m2, included one underground and three above-ground floors. HanmiGlobal provided construction project management (PM) services from November 2004 to October 2008 for this project.

As the Gwacheon National Science Museum comprises exhibition facilities dedicated to different concepts, HanmiGlobal leveraged its expertise accumulated from various national projects and organized integrated consultation meetings on architecture, facilities, and the interior on a regular basis, enhancing the quality of the project. Despite delays and frequent changes in the finalization of content and the size of facilities, HanmiGlobal successfully minimized the need for reconstruction through seamless project management. Furthermore, the company guaranteed adaptability to potential changes and relocations of facilities due to scientific advancement and trends by utilizing variable facilities to enable easier maintenance and minimize cost increases, even after the completion of the project.
